The importance of checking your vehicle's tyre pressure

Updated: Jul 10, 2023

We’re spending more time in our cars, and we’re using them to transport some of the world’s most precious cargo - our family and friends. Whether it is preparing your tyres for the rigid conditions of winter driving, or preparing your car for zooming around in the summer, the importance is the same (no matter the weather) when it comes to the importance of your tyres' pressure. That is to say, winter tyres, summer tyres, or all-weather tyres, you need to make sure that your tyres' pressure is always under control and in-check. In many ways there’s nothing more important than ensuring your car or truck tyres are at the right pressure.

Putting new tyre on truck

Making sure that you check your tyre pressure routinely is important for your safety whilst driving as well as being an important factor in improving fuel economy. Some studies done overseas have suggested that up to about 40 per cent of all car-fault accidents can be chalked up to under-inflated tyres.

By making sure that your tyres are properly inflated you will not only be making sure that you are a safer driver (thanks to having more responsive control of your vehicle,) but you will also be saving yourself a lot of money when it comes to replacing your tyres and getting other repairs done to your car. Under inflated tyres don’t last as long as tyres at their correctly inflated presser. They wear out more quickly and mean your car won’t be travelling at its optimum capacity.

There are also problems if your car tyres are over inflated - the problems are there they may just be different problems. Your safety can be compromised as your tyres have much less contact with the road, thus giving you less grip and traction when driving.

As a quick reminder, here are the main reasons that you should ensure your tyre pressure is checked and maintained regularly.

  1. By ensuring your tyres are inflated correctly you will increase their life expectancy. You will not have to buy new tyres as often.

  2. Correctly inflated tyres will improve your fuel consumption. You will save money. So do yourself a favour and head on over to the tyre pressure gauge next time you are getting petrol

  3. Correctly inflated tyres are designed for safety and comfort. With the right inflation you’ll have better traction, your car will handle better. This will lead to a more smooth, comfortable and reliable ride.
