6 crucial tips for storing your tyres in Melbourne

Updated: Jul 10, 2023

If you need to store your tyres for a short or long term period, how you store them is essential to keeping your tyres in a roadworthy condition. This is particularly true of businesses as you have a duty of care to ensure that any tyres used by your fleets are safe for your employees and those they share the roads with.

How to store your tyres
Don't store your tyres like this! Follow our tips to help prevent your stored tyres from becoming unsafe and un-roadworthy.

1. Ensure they are clean prior to storage

Whip out your brush and sponge and make sure your tyres are squeaky clean before storing them. Allow them to air dry before proceeding to the next step.

2. Wrap in a black plastic bag

An opaque, heavy-duty plastic bag is best for this purpose. Put your clean and dry tyre into its own bag, remove as much air as you can and then tape it up.

3. Store in a cool, clean spot out of direct sunlight

It’s best to find somewhere that is cool but clean. Ensure that the area isn’t prone to moisture, nor can it be reached by direct sunlight. UV rays are harmful to a static tyre and can lead to problems such as cracking as the tyre loses its flexibility.

4. Rotate your stored tyres regularly

Regularly rotating your stored tyres will allow necessary oxidisation chemicals to do their job of maintaining your tyres flexibility.

5. Ensure your tyres’ storage environment is still suitable

Don’t forget to check on your storage environment regularly. Check for signs of moisture and dampness or situations such as the nearby installation of a new piece of machinery that throws off heat.

6. Check your tyres thoroughly before use

Even if you’ve done everything right, your tyres may still dry out while in storage rendering them unsuitable and unsafe to use. So, perform a proper check on your tyres before use.
