What is wheel balancing?

The weight of different parts of a tyre can vary. Add to that the weight of the wheel assembly will differ from that of the tyre. Any imbalance can cause a wheel to vibrate or shake, especially when driving at higher speeds.

Wheel balancing works to ensure that all components of a wheel are weighted in such a way that there’s even distribution of force on the road.

Double D Tyres provides wheel balancing in Melbourne as a standalone service, as well as part of every new tyre fitting, tyre rotation and tyre puncture
repair. We have the expertise and equipment at our conveniently located workshops to service cars, utes, vans, and trucks.

Why do wheels need to be balanced?

Ever put your washing in a top loader washing machine? Sometimes, everything bunches up on one side, and the machine shakes—especially when it’s in spin mode. This is a little like what happens to an unbalanced wheel when driving at high speeds. If there’s more weight in one area of the tyre or wheel than in another, the wheel will likely vibrate.

Are unbalanced wheels dangerous?

For small imbalances, there’s no great safety concern. Moreso, you risk prematurely wearing out your suspension, steering components and tyres.

For severe wheel imbalance, risks include:

  • Vehicle instability when driving at high speeds
  • Reduced braking performance
  • Reduced tyre contact with the road.

When should I get my vehicle’s wheels checked?

Book your vehicle in for a tyre assessment if you notice that:

  • Your steering wheel vibrates
  • Your tyres have worn in certain areas more than others
  • Your drive is shaky, especially at high speeds.

Note, symptoms of wheel imbalance could actually be caused by something else, such as:

  • Loose wheel nuts
  • Worn-out suspension
  • A damaged wheel or tyre.

These issues may be safety critical, so it’s essential you seek a wheel assessment from a tyre expert as soon as possible.

Note: At Double D Tyres, we perform a wheel balance with every new tyre fitting, tyre rotation, and tyre puncture repair.

How does wheel balancing work?

We remove the wheels from your vehicle and mount them to a wheel balancing machine. This machine spins the wheels, measures for any imbalance, and identifies where it is located and how severe it is.

To correct an imbalance, we add weights to the wheel in strategic positions. We then spin the wheels again to ensure the imbalance has been corrected before we reattach them to your vehicle.

Is wheel balancing the same as wheel alignment?

Not quite. Wheel balancing corrects uneven weight distribution around the wheel assembly and tyre, whereas wheel alignment ensures there’s proper alignment of the wheels so that the vehicle tracks straight and tyres wear evenly. In some cases, a vehicle may need both services.
